"Take no thought (don't worry) for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink, nor yet for the body what ye shall put on…Behold the birds…Consider the lilies of the field." (Matthew 6:25-28)
Jesus was sitting on a mountain with His disciples and said, "Behold (look)… consider (think about this)." When He said this, the birds were overhead and the lilies surrounded them.
When He told us not to worry about the necessities of life, Jesus gave us two examples: the birds and the flowers. Do birds worry? How about flowers, do they worry? The answer to both questions is NO. The birds do not read the paper, watch the news, or look for stock market results. Their needs are always met. Do you ever hear birds flying through the air saying, "I wonder if I will have enough to eat today?" The birds never knew that we had a Great Depression. Only people jumped out of windows in fear and panic of what was coming.
Flowers are always dressed nicely. They do not wait for the new styles, or become concerned that they are wearing last season's clothes. God provides for them. Neither the birds nor the flowers live in the same world that we do. To worry about food places you below the level of a bird! To worry about clothing places you below the level of a flower! People are created superior to the animals and plants. Jesus watches over nature, but He did not die for birds or flowers. Jesus went to the cross for people. He loves nature, but He loves us more!
As Christians we exist in two worlds. We live in a physical world, but our needs are met from the spiritual world. We are in this world but not of it. We are only visitors to this earth, and our citizenship is in heaven--the spiritual world. God will supply for us according to His riches in glory. God's supply for us is not according to Wall Street or the First National Bank. The stock averages can go up and down, but the economy of heaven will never fail.
If God could supply for the children of Israel for forty years in the desert, can He not also supply for us today? If heaven is filled with every kind of jewel and precious metal, cannot God supply our financial needs in this life? If God owns the cattle on every hill and declares the gold and silver also belongs to Him, can He not move some of it in our direction? Quit worrying! Put your thoughts on serving God and let God think about your needs.
