Your Body is a Seed

“So also is the resurrection of the dead, it is sown in corruption, it is raised in incorruption…sown in weakness, raised in power” (2 Corinthians 15:42).

In both the Old and New Testaments, sowing and reaping is the foundation theme of the Word of God. “While the earth remains, seed time and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter and day and night shall not cease” (Genesis 8:22). Whether it is finances, love or friendship, you always reap what you sow. You also reap back more than you sow. Every seed has one hundred-fold potential, “good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over.

The same principle applies to the resurrection of the saints. Our body “… is sown in weakness, raised in power.” We will have a resurrection body one day just like the body of the Lord Jesus. As great as Jesus’ human physical body was while He was on earth, He received a greater body in the resurrection. And one day, we too will have a body like His. Our resurrection body will last forever, never get sick, will not be tempted to sin, and will be able to exist in heaven or on earth! This new body will be able to appear and disappear just as Jesus could when He was with His disciples in the upper room after the resurrection.

In 2 Corinthians 15:42, our body is compared to a seed. When a seed is planted in the ground, only the shell of the seed dies. The heart is then released and the new sprout and eventual plant or tree grows. Only the shell dies, the heart never dies! The heart of the seed carries the image of the plant or tree that will be formed. Only by planting the seed will the image become a reality.

When a Christian dies and is placed in the ground, only the body decays. The eternal heart (spirit and soul) goes on to be with the Father in heaven. One day a resurrection body will come out of the grave and it will be a spiritual body (vs. 44). In other words, it will be a body made from the recreated spirit. Our spirit—our inward man, carries the image of our resurrection body. The resurrection will be the great harvest day. That which was sown earlier will be harvested later. We do not bury Christians. We plant them!
